Is my aunt responsible for my new lease if she did not sign a renewal co-signer agreement?

My aunt co-signed on a lease for a period of 1 year. When I renewed I stated she no longer wanted to be a co-signer on the lease and I renewed my lease with my husband. My aunt did not sign anything renewing the lease but now they are saying she is on the new lease. Can this be legal?

Under the laws of all states in this country, if a person signs as a co-obligor under a lease for another person for a specified period of time and the lease that is subject to the co-signer agreeing to be bound to expires, the obligation of the co-signer as to that particular lease period and lease ends as well.

As such, your aunt is not obligated on the new lease that you signed if she did not sign a new document stating she would be obligated on it as well.
