Is it legal for board members of a non-profit organization to be hand picked?

Board members have been the same people for over 20 years and were handpicked. They have nothing to do with and know nothing about the organization. How many years can one person be on the board?

There is no limit in the law about how long someone can be on the board, and no rule stating they cannot be handpicked by other board members. In fact, non-profit boards are often handpicked, and their members can serve essentially forever if they want (or until a majority of the board removes them for some reason, should that ever happen).
