Is a husband/wife jointly responsible for medical expenses incurred during non-legal separation if they have subsequently filed for divorce?

My sister-in-law moved out of her house. A few weeks later her husband thought she was committing suicide so he called 911. She was taken to the hospital via ambulance and now has many bills associated with that incident. Her husband refuse to take any responsibility for those expenses and she is now in collections.

The general rule is that husbands and wives are responsible for the necessities of the other during marriage.  I am assuming that there is not health insurance policy in place here to cover the costs.  I think that they have a lot to work out here and she should seek legal help.  Good luck.
