If we rescued a dog from a non-profit pet rescue last year but had to place it with the SPCA, wht is out legal liability regarding the pet rescue people?

Just over a year later the placement was not working for our family for various reasons so we relinquished the dog to the SPCA. The rescue found out and has sent multiple e-mails, boarding on harassing, insisting our contract ( titled Adoption Agreement) required us to contact the organization if the adoption did not work out for any reason.

If there was a contract, (the Adoption Agreement), then your liability is as set forth in the agreement. If the Agreement does not specify the amount you may be liable for, it would likely be a small amount--e.g. the value of the rescued dog.
