If you had an infraction that was expunged, what should you put on a job application when they ask have you had a criminal offense?

Yes.  In CA, convictions aren't really expunged but are rather "dismissed."  Once the conviction is dismissed you still need to reveal your dismissed conviction on job applications.  They are not legally allowed to take dismissed convictions into account when making the hiring decision, but you still have to disclose it.  It's very counterintuitive, I know. 

I would write "Conviction for--XXX--Dismissed on x/x/2010."

If they ask you further questions, say it was dismissed and so they are not legally allowed to take the charges into account when hiring you.  Don't explain that you were conviction and then got it expunged.  The legal terminology is dismissed.
