The school would only be responsible if at fault in some way: for example, if the injury occured because the children weren't being supervised, or because the field trip activities were inappropriately dangerous for this age group. If the school were not at fault, they would not be liable.
Even if at fault, if they won't voluntarily pay, you would have to sue them for the money.
