If your cash register drawer comes up short, under federal law, generally as long as you still earn at least the minimum wage after the payment, there's no rule against charging losses and damage to you. That having been said, most states require an employer to get an employee's written consent before they can deduct the cost of broken merchandise or shortages from the employee's paycheck. To be certain of the law in your state, you can contact the Department of Labor and Industry.
