If I’m caught shoplifting $800 in merchandise, what am I facing as a sentence?

My wife and I got caught shoplifting; we were arrested on a Class D felony charge. We are currently out of jail awaiting our first court date. We have 4 children to care for and they have nowhere else to go.

A class D felony in your state can carry a one-year to five-year period of imprisonment. But if you otherwise have clean criminal records, there is a good chance that you will qualify for pre-trial diversion and avoid jail (so long as you comply with the terms of the diversion program).
