If i sell my car and cancell my insurance, is it legal for the company to keep charging me?

I recently sold my car and tried to cancell my car insurance but becuase i had a fenderbender they said i still had to keep paying each month (even though i dont have car) or else my accident will go on my mothers account and she will have to pay it. We are on the same policy but im 21 years old. Why cant the accident just get put back on my policy when i decided to get another car?
