If i have compiled educational materials and am an independent contractor, can the company claim the materials are theirs?
I am currently a contractor to run an English course. The notes given to students were compiled by me , in my own unpaid time. The company I present the course for – now wants to claim the materials as their own. Is this legal?

Yes, if you did this work for the company or as part of your employment, it belongs to them. Anything created by an employee as part of his or employment or for his or her employer belongs to the employer, unless and only to the extent there is a written agreement to the contrary, giving or reserving the rights to the employee.
