My question is was or is my second marriage valid? Can I re-marry now?

The fact is that you have no second marriage since your first was never legally ended. Your second wedding ceremony was of no legal force and effect; your attempted re-marriage was null and void. Therefore, you will need to get divorced before you can once again get married.
