if a person writes a will today does it cancel any previous wills? do we need a copy of the older one?
my mother in law is 85 and having some memory issues. I am not sure we can find
her old will. I do have her old attorneys name and number. Do I need the old
one? If we need it, can the attorney charge us for for giving us a copy of it?

The new Will should state that it revokes all prior Wills. Whether or not you find the prior Will, that provision should be included. You don't need the prior Will. The attorney can charge to provide a copy of the Will.
