If a person has a Will but at a later date re-writes how they want their 1/2 of an estate distributed?

The letter could be a holographic will, in which case it would replace the original will. You should talk to a trusts & estates lawyer in Texas to see if the letter meets the many requirements to be a holographic will. If the person is still able to execute a new will, it is certainly worth the effort to do so, instead of just relying on the letter being accepted as their holographic will.
