Joint legal custody is when there is an order by the court that states the parents will share authority regarding important decisions affecting the welfare of the child.  Those things include decisions regarding school, medical care, etc.  A parent that wishes to take a child on a trip while the child is in their care does not necessarily have to consult the other parent as long as the safety of the child is not at stake.  There has to be an intent to return. Good luck.
