If I would like to showcase the logos of companies that I have done work for on my website, am I allowed to do this without their permission or is this a copyright issue?

It is a copyright and a trademark issue (since logos would almost certainly qualify for trademark protection, too). You cannot use these logals to advertise your services or showcase your clients without the rights holders permission. You can simply name the companies, however, as long as you do not use their logos or other protected intellectual property.
