I work for a private golf course with a public restaurant…

Management says we are allowed to
consume alcohol on the golf course or in
the restaurant which means if I take my
wife there some evening for dinner I’m
not allowed to have even a glass of
wine. Can they restrict us lukecthat
even in a public restaurant. I can
understand the golf course since we are
not actually paying members but we do
get golf priveledges. Thank you.

Absent a union agreement or employment contract to the contrary, an employer can place just about whatever restrictions it wants on its employees, absent some form of actionable discrimination or public policy concerns (i.e. it cannot encourage illegal activity, etc.). The fact is that most work relationships are what is known as "at will". This means that it can set the conditions of employment much as it sees fit. For your part, you can either accept the restrictions, violate them but risk termination, or quit.
