What to do if I was on a bus that stopped to change buse and sheriff’s deputies made everyone get off and placed all of our luggage in a pile for drug-sniffing dogs to smell?

A dog detected a small amount of marijuana in my backpack. I am in graduate school. I pray that I can avoid a misdemeanor conviction, for many reasons, but most importantly so I do not lose eligibility to receive federal student aid. I have talked to one lawyer who felt that his firm would be able to work out a deal of some sort, for an estimated fee of $2500. I am low income, so I need to find out what options I have.

I suggest that you consult with a criminal defense attorney about the situation that you are in where a controlled substance was found in your backpack to see what your legal options are. Possibly you can work a plea deal where you are on court probation and if you satisfy the terms the charge could be dismissed without a conviction.
