If I was in an verbal argument with another employee at work, could I be fired at a later date?

I thought they were going to fire me but instead the called me into the managers office and had me speak with the manager and his boss. After the telephone conversation I was given a write-up. Then 2 weeks later our district manager came into the office and told me that I was fired for that incident. It was the first time I was ever written up and I was under the impression that the write-up was my disciplinary action. Was that legal for them to come in and fire me at a later date?

Under the laws of all states in this country an employee is terminable at the will of the employer unless the termination is based upon protected areas of discrimination.

From what you have written there was a basis for your termination. To be sure I suggest you consult with a labor law attorney and/or a representative with your local department of labor.
