What do I do if I was fired 2 weeks ago and still haven’t been paid?

I was working for a subcontractor being paid hourly by company check in louisiana. I was owed almost $1000 and when I got mad and asked about my money I was fired. This was over 2 weeks ago and I still haven’t been paid. What are my options?

Like many states, in LA, your final paycheck must be provided on the next regularly scheduled payday (that is, when you would have been paid next, had you remain employed), or within 15 days, whichever comes sooner.

If you are not paid by your employer, you may sue him for the money--an employee must be paid for all work done up to the end of his or her employment. Depending on the amount, you may wish to sue in small claims court, where filing (court) fees are lower, you can act as your own attorney (saving on legal fees), and cases tend to move faster.
