If you discovered that after you had been paying rent for a supposed legal rental and found out that it was not a legal rental that you were paying rent for, you should consult with the local housing office about this situation to see if you would be entitled to a partial or full refund of all rental monies that you paid the landlord during the term of the lease.
I also suggest that you consult with a landlord tenant attorney about this situation. Good luck.
