What to do if I received a 4th degree assualt charge and can’t afford a lawyer?

This is my 1st offense. I am in the military. I do not have money to pay for a lawyer. I am not sure if I should plead guilty and go with the consequences or have a public defense represent me.

Hello. You may apply for a public defender. I certainly urge you to have attorney assistance in this matter regardless. Some attorneys, myself included, are available seven days for emergency legal needs. Many attorneys will confer initially at no charge. Then, if legal work is performed, some attorneys, myself included, will provide a reduced fee for financial hardship. Some attorneys, myself included, may also assist you in limited scope manner to conserve legal costs. All the best.

If you cannot afford legal representation with respect to the criminal charge that you are now facing, I suggest that you consult with the public defender's office in the county and state where the criminal action is pending to see if you qualify for legal defense at no cost.
