Canone co-owner make another co-owner sell property?

I purchased a condo 15 years ago with a friend. I have paid all expenses on this condo. It is my home. I received a letter from his lawyer saying I must either buy him out which I cannot afford or sell which will leave me with no place to live. Can he do this?

Unfortunately, yes he can do this. When 2 joint owners cannot agree on property matters, an action for "partition" can be filed in court. A partition is a legal remedy that will result in either the division of the property (as in the case of raw land) or the judge ordering the sale of the property (as in the case of a single family dwelling). However before the property is put on the market, the co-owner who wishes to keep it has the option of buying out the other owner for fair market value.
