The purpose of proper service is to make sure that people are aware of pleadings, motions, or subpoenas. However, if somone is in fact aware of a subpoena, then the purpose of service was served, even if service was not made properly; therefore, if you are aware of the subpoena prior to the appearance date, you would have to appear.
