How do I determine if an auto repair shop is liable for damage to my car?

I had transmission work done last summer; afterwards (September) the bolts holding the transmission/motor in place failed, causing the drivetrain to come loose. The shop did replace those bolts and remounted everything, charging me about $100. It said that they technically didn’t cause it the first time but given the age of the car, there likely was stress from the work that contributed to the failure. Since then, everything ran until this weekend (less than 1 year). The mounts failed again and the motor/transmission dropped completely onto the road (while driving). This caused extensive mechanical damage to the vehicle. I called the shop who picked it up. What should I seek?

The best way to get an opinion as to the liability of the auto repair shop for your vehicl or not is to take your vehicle to an independent trusted mechanic for a review of the car and an indpendent opinion by him or her (the mechanic) as to whether or not the auto repair shop caused the problems you are writing about as to your vehicle.
