But you re 17 now and a minor and your parents have every right to press charges if they so choose.  When you say "dating"  I am going to assume that you were sleeping together, okay?  Sex with a minor can result in different charges, none of them considered to be "good."  They can include statutory rape, child molestation charges and even sexual assault charges. And if he is convicted of any of these charges he is facing cosequesnces such as imprisonment and mandatory sex offender registration.  When you say that he has a "record" really what do you mean?  People make mistakes in life and how they choose to learn from them is what matters.  If he has cleaned up his act and taken the high road then it says a lot for his character.,  What he has been convicted for also plays a part in that scenario.  But it really does not matter more than the fact that he is an adult and you are a minor and things are going to get ugly.  I know that you are looking at this all in a very different light.  And that you may feel things for him that others may not understand.  But you need to step back for a second and think with your head and balance all the factors involved.  If you want to act like an adult then you need to think like one too.  Good luck.
