If I have private student loans and they go into default can my wages be garnished?

I’ve contacted the lender servicing my private loans and even tried applying for a temporary hardship and was denied.

As a general matter, if you owe money and do not pay it, the creditor can seek to garnish your wages--and that includes for private student loans.

However, certain states, such as Texas and North Carolina, do not allow wage garnishment. If you live in one of the states that forbids garnishment, your wages may not be garnished.
