If I have a bank account with another person who does not use the account at all but they have a debt, can the account be garnished?
I have a bank account with another person who does not use the account at all. I use it for my Social Security and payroll to be deposited. I recently received a notice from the bank that they are taking money from the account to pay a debt for the other person. None of the money is his. Can they do that?

The answer to your question is probably, yes. If the other person is named on your account, then he is an owner of the account. This is a hazard of placing other people on a bank account for convenience.
I am not a debt collections attorney and know very little about garnishment. I would ask the branch manager of the bank what he or she suggests. If that does not help, I suggest you contact a collections attorney immediately for advice.
