What to do if I closed on my home and the taxes were disclosed to me incorrectly?

I closed on my home in 2 1/2 years ago and the taxes were disclosed to me being $1200 per year. My mortgage just increased by almost $200 monthly because they disclosed the wrong amount. The taxes are actually $1400 more than what they said and now I’m paying back taxes for 1.5 years, plus an increase of $166 a month. This would’ve been a deal breaker if I would’ve known. Is this legal? Isn’t this what we pay agents, attorneys and insurance for? Can I sue someone for damages? This is really tough in the current economy.

Unfortunately there really is not much that you can do against the seller of the property that you purchased from due to the issue about the proeprty tax issue. You need to realize that the prior owner may have been paying less in taxes due to a lower purchase price than what you made on the property. The higher purchase price, the higher annual property taxes will be for the same property.

You could speak with a real estate attorney about your situation and inquire about the possibility of trying to obtain an adjustment of the property taxes on the property that you now own.
