If I am a US citizen and I want to petition my parents, what documents are required for that procedure?

I am a US citizen and I want to petition my parents for permanent residency in the US. Recently I realized they have some issues with their birth certificates: their birth dates in the birth certificates are different from their passports. I want to know if birth certificate is required for green card paperwork?
