How well does an anonymous corporation protect your identity?

I am not trying to hide from government or taxes. Nothing illegal. I was a software designer at a very large company. I want to start a web site for financial companies. While I would not directly compete against this company, I might try to sell to the same clients. I worry that they might sue if they realized my identity. I doubt they would win. But the cost would kill the new business before it started.

If you are the owner of the company (i.e. the sole shareholder) and/or the person who incorporated it and/or the agent for service of process, that information is all public record: if anyone searches for the identity of the people behind this corporation, they will be able to find you.
