1) An employer may fire you using any method--orally/verbally; by email or text message; by letter; etc.--and does not have to formally give you a "pink slip." Furthermore, the employer is not obligated to provide you notice of termination within any particular time period.

2) The employer is generally under no obligation to explain why you are being terminated.

The exception to the above is if you have an employment contract which limits your termination to certain reasons (which would have to be explained and possibly justifed or proven) and/or requires certain kinds of notice of termination; if you have such an employment contract, it's terms are enforceable.
