How far back does a NJ background check go
Im in the process of finding a new job, and Ive
been hired pending a background check….I
have 3 3rd degree crimes drug related-all
happened at the same time yet these offenses
occurred 13 years ago. I was wondering if I
could be disqualified from employment based
on these ancient mistakes I made in my early
20s.

A background check goes back as far as the employer wants it to: there is no statutory or mandatory limit on it. So they could potentially find and choose to not hire you due to those long-ago mistakes. It is unfair, but unfortunately legal. Remember: employment in this nation is "employment at will": the employer decides who to hire, and can refuse to hire someone for any reason not specifically made illegal--but there is no law making it illegal to not hire due to an old criminal record.
