How can I avoid paying for new carpet in an apartment I did not trash?

I signed a lease agreement on a 1 year apartment contract and I just recently signed the move-out forms. I did my walk-through with a manager of the apartment and she assured me that everything is fine. Now they are saying I had pets in the apartment and they are telling me I have to have the carpet replaced. The woman I spoke to on the phone told me that I had several written notices on my door – that I never received – telling me to vacate the pets but I never had pets living in the apartment. Now they want me to pay to have the carpets replaced because they said it was trashed and smelled horrible.

Is the same woman who did the walk through with you? Did you take pictures? Did you get a checklist or something in writing after the walkthrough? Try to talk to the manager who did the walkthrough and ask for proof.
