If the house was acquired during marriage and was not gifted to or inherited by husband, then the wife has a right to the equity in it and should be compensated for her share of its value on divorce--that is, the house would be one of the assets divided in divorce.
But if the house was owned by the husband and his mother pre-marriage, or they inherited it (or can show it was purchased solely with inherited money), or it was given to them as a gift, it is not marital property and the wife has no interest in it.
