If I’m a British citizen employed on an E-2 visa and work in the US but plan to take an unpaid sabbatical of 3 months, how does that stand with the conditions of my visa?
I would continue to be employed by the same company who sponsored me throughout this time, and the visa is valid for the duration of the sabbatical.Is it permissable to travel abroad during these 3 months and return to the US on the existing visa? Is it permissable to work for an employer abroad temporarily during this time? e.g. to accept a 3 month internship somewhere. Either option has been approved by my company, but just need to find out if it’s acceptable within the conditions of my visa.

Yes, during the validity of the E-2 petition and visa, you are permitted to travel internationally, work or not work for the current employer and work for another employer while abroad. It should not affect your E2 visa from the immigration standpoint.
