If someone with a clean record is caught taking around $150 worth of merchandise from a retail store, what would be in their best interests legally?

Plead not guilty, even though they were caught? Can the criminal record still be kept clean after this?

So you were caught shoplifting and charged with petty theft?  Are you an adult or a minor?  You need to hire an attorney.  Generally there are diversion programs available to first time offenders and if the program is completed and the person stays clean for a period of time the case is dismissed. But the arrest still stays of your record and work has to be done to have it removed.  Yes, you plead not guilty. Get help.
