Do you think I need an attorney? If so when should I retain an attorney?

I was arrested and charged with burglary.
When the officer made contact I was not in a
dwelling or building. I was standing next to my
truck in a public parking lot. I did have some
items in my truck that the cop assumed I stole.

You do not need to be caught on-site in order to be arrested and possibly convicted of a burglary charge. Additionally, just being in possession of stolen items is its own crime. Since this is an offense that can carry heavy jail time, you really need legal representation. At this point, you should consult directly with a criminal law attorney who practices in the area of where this incident occurred.
