DoI need an attorney to respond to an action for a divorce summons?

I received a Action for Divorce summons, served in person. I know I have 20 days to respond. Do I have to have a lawyer respond, because don’t have money to retain one right now. And I don’t want to default on this letter. I also don’t understand what a written Demand for a Complaint or a written Notice of Appearance is or means?

You were served with a petition and summons for a dissolution of your marriage. The "written demand for a complaint or a written notice of appearance" in the documents you received are essentially a request for you to answer the dissolution proceeding in writing with affirmative defenses if need be.

Although you do not need an attorney to answer the dissolution proceeding. However, it is best to consult with one to assist in preparing a proper response to the complaint. Potentially the county bar association where you live may have clinics they sponsor to assist people who need assistance like you for no charge. Likewise law schools in your area may also have similar clinics to assist people in dealing with a lawsuit.

Good luck.
