Do I need a lawyer or mediation for a business that has failed to restore a classic vehicle in a timely manner?

In 2012 I paid my mechanic to repair some damage, and he requested that we begin restoration. I agreed. I paid in full for all labor and bought the parts without a written contract. He had worked on my Bronco several times prior, so I had faith in him. He still has my 76 Bronco at his shop and has failed to put it back together. I would like advice on which type of lawyer or mediator to contact.

Don't go for a mediator: mediation is voluntary, not mandatory, and can't compel an outcome. You could spend a great deal of time and money on mediation and get nothing. At this point, you need to sue for breach of contract and/or fraud--taking your money without doing what he promised he could or would. Retain an attorney who handles business or consumer litigation (that is, lawsuits arising out of violating contracts or agreements, or from false commercial advertising; not a lawyer who goes to court but only on family law or personal injury lawsuits or criminal cases).
