Is my wife responsible for a medical bill debt once I pass away?

I incurred a large medical debt. My wife was not living with me at the time nor did she sign anything accepting the debt obligation. I live in NH.

Good question. Were you and your wife legally separated at the time you incurred the large medical debt? If you and she were legally separated at the time, she should not be personally responsible for this medical bill once you pass away, your estate would.

However, if you and your wife were not legally separated at the time you incurred these medical bills, her one half interest in the marital estate estate would be responsible for these bills. I suggest that you consult with an attorney experienced in debt issues regarding your question for further answers.
