What to do bout debt collection calls to me for wife’s debt?

I just received a call from a debt collector that said I owe medical bills from my spouse that are 2 years old. My wife had kept the debt a secret from me and this was the first I had heard of it. We live in Iowa. I know that in Iowa I’m not even supposed to be contacted for my spouses debts. Is it different with medical bills? Am I actually responsible for it? What can they do to me if they don’t pay?

Generally speaking, and in most states, spouse's are legally responsible for each other's medical bills under the law of "necessities."  If the bills are not paid then they will sue like any creditor.  I would speak with an attorney about the matter as soon as you can.  You could try and negotiate the bill to pay.  Good luck.
