Creating a will is itself free--there are no charges associated with it.

The cost comes from the attorney; a good lawyer will usually charge between $300 and $800 for a  simple will, such as for a married couple with few assets. It's a good idea to go to an attorney, however, since if a will is not created and executed correctly, it might be unenforceable.

In addition to a will, you should think about:

1) A power of attorney, to allow one of you to handle the banking, business, finance, etc. of the other, if the other is incapacitated.

2) An advanced health directive or medical power of attorney, designating someone to make medical decisions for you when you are incapacitated; can be combeined with a living will, to express your preference and instructions regarding resuccitation, life prolonging care when terminally ill or incapacitated, etc.
