Can my employer require me to pay back a cash handling mistake?

I put the wrong amount in for a credit card tip and the customer called my place of business and disputed the over-charge. Is it illegal for my employer to make me pay it back?

First of all, your employer cannot deduct for any such matter from your paycheck (absent a signed written agreement to the contrary); such a deductions would be illegal. However, for such a loss, your employer may subject you to disciplinary action, up to and including termination. Further, your employer can bring an action in court to try to recover any damages and/or losses it has suffered.
