CanI make my apartment complex pay for water damagedue tonegligent roof work?

A few days ago there was some roof work be performed above my apartment. A day later it rained and shorted out my TV due to a large leak in the roof. Can I make the apartment complex or roof contractors pay for the damages?

When your property is damaged due to another's negligence, or unreasonable carelessness, that person is potentially liable for your loss. In this case, if the contractor's work was negligent and that negligence caused the leak and the damage, it is possible the contractor, or your landlord as its employer, may be liable for you television.

Of course, if neither will pay voluntarily, you would have to sue to try to force them to pay. If the "only" loss is your television, you'd probably be best off looking at a small claims lawsuit, where you can act as your own attorney and where filing and court costs are fairly low.
