If you have paid your property taxes for your home as assessed by your county's tax assessor's office but the home was later assessed at a lesser amount decreasing the amount of your property taxes and the property tax bill does not reflect the new assessement where you ended up paying too much, then you should do the following:

1. contact the county tax assessor about the overpayment and ask for a "credit" of the overpayment to your next tax bill.

The reason is that once the tax assessor receives payment, you will not get its return for the excess so long as you own the property that you are writing about.
