Can I be sued if I was involved in an accident and the owner of the vehicle had fake insurancebut I didn’t know about it?

About 2 years ago, I was involved in an accident. I was rear-ended and slid into the car in front of me. The vehicle that hit me fled the scene and when the police arrived, the other driver and I gave our statement. No one was given a ticket, however 2 weeks later, I received a letter from the other party’s insurer stating that the insurance on my friend’s car could not be verified and I was at fault for the accident because the was no insurance on the car. When I went and got the police report, I noticed that the officer didn’t mention that I was hit and I haven’t been able to change it.
