You can be terminated if you miss work without having and using paid time (PTO; like sick or vacation days) or without being eligible for and using FMLA leave (you can find the criteria on the U.S. Dept. of Labor website--rememer that your employer must be large enough to be covered and you must be eligible as well). Employees may not miss work, even for illness, without using PTO or FMLA, and if they do, they may be terminated for it.
