Yes, this can be done. Videotaping workers is legal so long as it is limited to their job performance and work activities. Accordingly, a company may videotape employees in order to prevent employee theft, to confirm that company policy is being followed, etc. That having been said, such recordings may violate an employee's right to privacy if they are videotaped in areas that are considered private such as bathrooms, locker rooms, break rooms, etc. Further, employers must provide written notice that video surveillance is being conducted and where it is being used, as well as state the areas that are off limits from such surveillance.
