Can a landlord require me to carry homeowners insurance?

I am leasing a home that the Landlord has put in the lease that I have to carry homeowner’s insurance on the property up to the value of the home, listing him and his bank on the policy. I have the option to buy the home at he end of the lease if I can get financing. Is this lawful since I have no vested financial interest in the home.

The exact type of insurance you could be required to get might be different than indicated--it might not be homeowner's per se, since you're not the homeowner--but the landlord could absolutely require you to have the appropriate insurance (e.g. renters; a general liability policy; an umbrella policy) naming him and his bank. So while he may have written done the wrong specific name or type of insurance, he can require you to have insurance.
