Can a landlord ask for my child’s social security number?

We applied for an apartmentgot approved, paid a deposit, but they want my child’s social security number. I do not want to give this to them. Am I required to? If I refuse can they refuse me the apartment?

Under what theory did they ask for it?  I can see them asking for your for a credit check prior to approval but the child can not be held liable under the law for the contract you signed (the lease) and there is no legal reason to ask for it.  I would ask them why they need it and ask them to make the request in writing so that you can ask your attorney to review it.  They might back down but if they do not I would ask an attorney in your area for help.  Good luck.
